This project is part of my work with The Algae Society, a bioart design lab collective of artists and scientists, which has exhibited a wide variety of work in exhibitions around the world and online.
Anna Atkins was a British botanist and photographer. Her 1843 book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions is considered the first book illustrated with photographic images. Although sources differ and the issue is unlikely to be fully resolved, Atkins is claimed to be first female photographer. (Other sources attribute this to Constance Fox Talbot.)
This font was created from high resolution scans of Photographs of British Algae held in the New York Public Library. After a multistage process of image processing of the text in those scans, the raw letterforms were further processed into a font file that can be used in place of any computer font.
